Welcome to FemTube!
FemTube focuses on empowerment and community for creators who are often underrepresented within YouTube and media as a whole.
FemTube began out of the Women on YouTube Creator Workshop at VidCon 2015 when brainstorming activities for how to create activism throughout the year. The idea was discussed that there should be a day dedicated to only watching female videos on YouTube every month, and after VidCon, Akilah Hughes coined the name, FemTube. Thus, in August of 2015, on the first Monday of that month, FemTube began. That whole day, everyone took to the hashtag and posted links of videos they were watching, boosting creators and spreading the love.
I have the tradition that on the first Monday at 8:00 am Pacific, I begin livetweeting from the FemTube playlist I curate of videos from the month before and take to social media platforms with the tag, encouraging others to participate. Since this August will be the one-year anniversary and the #FemTube movement has spread so that there was a meetup at this year's VidCon and much love, we have expanded the movement and taken on task forces to bring in a larger community aspect.
The mission statement of FemTube from the get-go has always been about welcoming in everyone who feels underrepresented else, and wants a safe space to discuss their creative work. With this website, we can only continue to grow. This is only the beginning!
